Just FYI re:fixer acidity; I recently tested my kodak
rapid fixer print bath #2 w/NO hardner added, and it
has a pH of 5.
Whether this is due to carry over from stop bath or is
it's nature I'm not sure as it was a slightly used
bath.

That sounds too acid. The hardener has some Sulfuric
acid in it which should lower the pH. By memory, the correct
pH for the hardener to work is around 6.2 so the fixer
without the addition of the hardener solution should be more
alkaline than this. I also can't remember the exact pH of
Acetic acid stop bath but generally fixers are quite well
buffered so that carried over stop bath should not affect it
too much. Something puzzling there.
How did you make the pH measurement?
