When I first posted the formula for the combination
toner one correspondent wrote back saying that when he tried
it he got good results using very old KRST but when using
the current Kodak product he got instant dark stains on
prints. My own KRST is about ten years old so I bought a new
bottle of KRST this afternoon from Freestyle and retested
the toner. The results were the same as the other day: good
purplish-brown tones and no staining. This time I tried
using stock Kodak Hypo Clearing Agent as a stop bath (its
about 10% sulfite). This did not appear to make any
difference. Possibly this is because I was washing one sheet
of paper at a time in a tray with very rapid water flow.
Also, my test prints were on RC paper which washes out very
quickly. I also tried combining the toner I mixed today with
the stuff from the other day, the mixed solution works the
same.
In any case, I have no explanation of why this should
have failed for someone else except it does not seem to be
the Kodak Rapid Selenium Toner.
I also can't find the original thread so I am not sure if
the toner tested was this formula or one of the two from the
Kodak booklet. The Kodak versions contain Kodalk, this
version, also attributed to Kodak, contains Sodium
Carbonate.
In any case, for those who used Kodak Polytoner or the
old version of Agfa Viradon this combination toner may be a
satisfactory substitute.
Note that for bad smell fans this toner treats you to
both Ammonia and Hydrogen sulfide at the same time, wheee.
