Well, some 23 years after I first really wanted a LF camera, I
finally made that leap. I've long realized that one of my weaknesses
as always been a rush to snap the shot with my trusty Nikon FG. I
was hoping that this would force me to slow down and pay more
attention to whole vision thing (to quote our former leader, George
XLI)
After a few weeks playing with my new Shen Hao 4x5 (or 5x4 for
those driving on the left), I'm very happy with the initial
experience. So far, I've set up a lot more "pictures" than I have
actually exposed. The movements are surprisingly intuitive,
especially when watching from under the darkcloth. So far, I've
stuck close to home, as I haven't figured a good way to pack
everything up yet.
Unfortunately, while our recent move has enabled this purchase, it
also has restricted my time and I've lost my former darkroom, at
least for now. In the meantime, I've started with Polaroid Type55 to
get rapid feedback as I start to learn how to tame this beast, and
also have the negative for the eventual day I can print again. If
anybody would like to see the first samples, I have some at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kjgriffin/ in the large format set.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this list. I always learn
so much from the discussions.
