   Ascorbic acid is related to vitimin C not A. The 
substance in Xtol is Sodium Isoascorbate. Ascorbic acid is a 
weak developer when used alone but it has super additive 
qualities similar to Hydroquinone when used with other 
developers. Commercial developers use ascorbic acid with 
Metol or Phenidone. It is not a direct replacement for 
Hydroquinone, it is only similar in some ways in its 
actions.
   Xtol contains a version of Phenidone called Kodak 
Dimezone-S, isoascorbic acid, Sodium sulfite, borax and 
sodium hydroxide in propertions to result in Sodium 
Metaborate in solution, EDTA, to sequester magnesium and 
calcium carbonates in the water.
   AFAIK, no other vitimins have been used as developing 
agents.
