Hi Jonathan,
I just got your note about calling you. Thank you for the offer. As
things move along, I probably will give you a call in the coming weeks.
Right now, I'm reading up on the material various people have sent me
and referred me to. Very, very useful. I checked out Amazon.com and
they have DeLorme ?Southern & Central California Atlas & Gazetteer?
and ?Death Valley SUV Trails?.
I 'll get on it tomorrow and order both books. For me it'll be a good
investement as i intend to go back there, maybe this coming winter.
I already have my flight booked into Vegas on the 18th of June and have
rented a 4x4 Rav-4, the smallest 4x4 they had. I want to leave a small
footprint. I've also booked a week in Tecopa Hot Springs just outside
Soshone. So every thing is set. Now I just have to get ready.
Thanks for the URL to the Furnace Creek Weather Service. My wife will
be able to keep tabs on the weather while at home and it'll give me a
good idea of what to expect just before I leave.
I share your concerns about the summer climate in the desert but I have
been to the desert in Anza Borrego and the Salton Sea 5 times in the
past ten years, so I have a very good idea of what to expect and how to
prepare for it. i'm not into the macho thing like the crazy germans who
ride around on their trail bikes wearing only shorts. I will adapt to
the land and treat it with respect. I'm too old at 60 to do stupid
things; I plan on being around for a few more years and a few more trips
to Dearth Valley.
I received an e-mail from Agnes and her offer is very tempting but that
will have to be for maybe next year. First I have to get Death Valley
out of my system. Saw too many "Death Valley Days" on TV when I was a
kid and would dream of driving a 40 mule Borax train through the
valley. I have dreams that need pursuing. Three years ago I walked on
the Great Wall of China. Death Valley is another one.
As I read the documentation, questions are starting to pile up and maybe
you will be be able to answer them for me. One that immediately comes
to mind is the gas situation. Is gas available in Furnace Creek,
StovePipe Wells and Soshone. Beatty will surely have one; if it has a
casino , then surely a gaz station. What about things like convenience
stores??? The cabin I have in Tecopa has a kitchenette so i plan on
taking full advantage of that. Like to have my 3 cups of coffee and
breakfast at three in the morning before I hit the road to be at my
destination at first light.
Anyway, I will be in touch with you soon, as soon as I get a chance to
look through the books from Amazon.com. There will be plenty of
questions. By the way, where do you live, so that I know your time
zone. I'm in Montreal, EST, it's now 10:28pm. What is the best time to
call you?
Again, a big Thank you for all the information you've given me a real
silver mine ;)
Since I live in canada, I'm a member of the CAA but I was wondering if
there is any way I can get a hold of the two AAA maps on Death Valley
that you mentioned below. I'm also a map collector. I'm hoping that
the two books will give more that just road maps. Road maps are just
that, roads. I want to know more. I like reading topo maps. Will be
bringing my compass.
Till later,
Bogdan
