The key word in this article is may, “ a University of Missouri researcher
has found that silver nanoparticles also MAY destroy benign bacteria that
are used to remove ammonia from wastewater treatment systems.” The research
is just beginning, as usual chemicals are manufactured and introduced with
out our full understanding of the effects they may have on the environment.
Also the article did not reveal exactly which form of silver is used in the
nanoparticle. Some forms of silver are toxic.
The real issue is our waste disposal system is obsolete, very expensive,
and detrimental to our environment. Water is one of our most precious
resources, and in some areas of the world water is in extremely short
supply. Unfortunately waste water treatment plants end product, water, is of
limited use to our society because it is contaminated. The western United
States has stretched it water supplies to the max, and the situation is very
bleak because of the predicted climate change induced drought. As we are
reaching the limits of our conservation effort the solution is going to
require a complete reengineering of the disposal of our waste with a system
that does not use water as the transport system.
