I learned a lot.
Peter, your link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostScript led to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format . The latter link said
that "PDF is a file format, not a programming language, i.e. flow control
commands such as if and loop are removed, while graphics commands such as
lineto remain." That answers my first question in this thread.
It also gave me some new information: "PDF is supported by Microsoft Office
2007 (an additional free download from Microsoft is required)." That's
great. I just bought Office 2007, but I have not yet installed it. This
means that I won't have to convert my Word files to WordPerfect. I was not
happy with the formatting in the converted documents, as I wrote previously.
Hugh and Peter, I looked into Foxit, as you recommended. Yes, I think I'd
prefer to include it with my ebooks rather than Acrobat. It's quicker and
smaller. It also handles Hugh's justifiable criticism of unwanted downloads
for the unwary, such as Yahoo toolbar and Adobe download manager. Thank you
for the heads-up.
Now that I've seen the security features in PDF, I'd rather go that route,
even though it has disadvantages, rather than RTF or HTML. This new
information about the ability to save directly from Word 2007 may also
handle some of the ease of use issues.
So, the tide has turned. I was turned off by PDF because of the intial
comments in this thread, but this additional information has made me feel
that it may be the way to go after all.
