problem installing security #68 patch

Hi,
    I'm having a problem installing this patch
using the "opatch" utility
The system is HP11,  Oracle 8.1.7.4 (64bit).
Here is the error I get :

$opatch lsinventory
PERL5LIB=; export PERL5LIB
/usr/bin/perl /oracle/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/patches/OPatch/opatch.pl 
lsinventory
Using oraInst.loc to look up oui libs...

Parsing /oracle/app/oracle/oraInventory/ContentsXML/comps.xml

/oracle/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/patches/OPatch/opatch.pl version: 1.0.0.0.50

Cannot open to read file /oracle/app/oracle/oraInventory/ContentsXML/comps.xml
  OS_ERROR = [No such file or directory]

I get the same error when I attempt to run "opatch apply".
The directory "/oracle/app/oracle/oraInventory/ContentXML" does not exist.
Should it be there, or will it be created depending on which products are 
installed ?

I've searched metalink, and contacted support but so far have been unsuccessful.

 Your help is appreciated.
