Hi Charles and all,
I use crs_stop, crs_start, and the crs_(un)register commands regularly with
little fear and I've never had an issue (that didn't get resolved by using
these commands somehow). I recognize that Oracle may not support what I'm doing
sometimes, but perhaps my confidence comes from using these commands (by their
previous names) back when the product was Digital's TruCluster product. It
doesn't look that much different than it did back then--just some name changes.
When 10g was first released and Clusterware made its debut, it took me a while
to get used to using srvctl when I was more prone to using the _stop and _start
commands.
Ahh...the good ol' days. I miss the trusty old VMS clusters :).
Thanks, Charles, for doing a good job at letting us know how/why the issue got
resolved. It's relatively easy to post problems to the list, but it takes some
discipline to post solutions.

It is tough to diagnose from here. =) See the rant that Bill Wagman shares with
us.
As Li-Shan Cheng pointed out, we had to use crs_stop on ASM first, and then
srvctl remove asm. LS Cheng did a great job at reproducing the error and coming
up with the right solution.
I agree, the documentation is good indeed; but not comprehensive by any means.
Li-Shan pointed out, from the documentation, that one should use crs_stop when
a service is in an UNKNOWN state, but there is not much else besides that. And
you gotta love those "dangerous" commands. We were recently by Oracle Support
told that crs_unregister is buggy and not well supported.
There is a lot of black magic that goes on with CRS, enough to make any
BAAG-party member have cold sweats and nightmares. *grin*

try using the -f option of srvctl remove. You may also need to run
crs_unregister to clean it up. There are some good docs out there on these
commands. Also note that these are dangerous commands and you should backup
your OCR before you run them, just in case something goes a miss.
