By default, all mail transfer agents like sendmail, disable
"promiscuous relay". Otherwise, many external relays facing the net
would get black listed. Of course, if you are in some corporate
domain, they permit you without password, because the relay server has
some setting that allows "all smtp connectoins from these set of
servers" a la local-host-names. To permit mobile users to route their
email thru their relay servers, they allow smtp auth sessions, which
require some authentication.
