FYI, the Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network began 15 kHz
stereo distribution to 14 cities via AT&T in 1973 using Siemens
equipment that substituted one stereo pair for a telco "group" (12 phone
calls).

While local TV had decent sound even back in the 1960s, basically the
same as FM radio but much less dynamic range (due to the 50 KHz
bandwidth of TV audio), Network TV shows sounded no better than AM
radio. Then suddenly, around 1976 or 1977, I noticed almost overnight
that all network TV shows sounded identical to the local transmissions.
Audio bandwidth out to around 15 KHz or so.
Goodbye AT&T land lines for network distribution, hello to satellite
delivered programming.
