One additional thought re the "Missing Sports Dialog" problem described below.
They describe a situation using a Stereo only TV using "Hyper-Stereo" ,
aka "Expanded Stereo" or something similar, my Hitachi just calls it "Matrix
Surround".....
but I never liked the "fake" sound.
There are no doubt different implementations....some early ones simply added a
small
amount of L to R (and vice versa), except inverted
in order to lower
the L+R signal and emphasize the surround sound field.
More modern synthetic surround modes may do something similar, except they also
can derive
LS/RS signals in a Dolby Decoder chip (which delays them a bit to emphasize the
surround effect)
and reinsert onto L/R speakers....give or take a proprietary algorithm.....
So if you have missing dialog problems while listening in Stereo, switch off
the Hyper/Expanded Stereo.
Here's an example Demo:

Obviously, this is only one way for Dialog to disappear....and since I never
use it, all of my experience
with missing Dialog and/or Center Channel is a different fault mechanism.....

doing then. I thought that if you didn't have surround speakers, then that
would account for the missing dialog. If the commentary is intentionally
out-of-phase, then a DPL circuit would route it to the surrounds. No
surrounds, no commentary.

Yes, 10-in L/R, 7-in C, LS, RS (all DIY) and pair of vintage Altec VOTT 15-in

But I frequently listen to just the 42-in Hitachi Plasma (large detachable
speakers)
plus an external 7-in "sub-woofer" I built as a separate section in the Center
speaker.

Sorry if this has been covered already - I haven't been following this thread.

Further trolling on www.linearacoustic.com revealed yet another mechanism
for "missing dialog", esp. during sports events...or with an overly aggressive
synthetic surround mix:

Several music and sports broadcasts (incl. FOX) have been using SRS Circle
Surround
encoding to synthetically "enhance" their ambience:
http://www.srslabs.com/pressarticle322.asp?sid=249
Which is why they sound "fake".......
The Stereo (Lt/Rt) downmix would contain an ample amount of anti-phase signals.
Linear Acoustic claims that the synthetic surround processors in some
TVs and AV Receivers somehow gets confused and nulls out the Center channel.
But, I've never "fixed" a missing dialog problem in a Stereo program by simply
switching off my AV Receiver's PL-II synthetic surround mode....so go figure....
