Yes, but such a user should *never* have to touch the Terminal anyway.
In the preferences application it makes sense to have the name of the
driver prefixed with "Ethernet", but not for ifconfig.
Also knowing which driver is used and where it is placed is very nice
from a user perspective, as he can actually understand how the system
works without having to think that much :)

I hope you see my point now: we should care so much about usability,
that a user should never ever have to not use the preferences app.
That doesn't mean that no one could use ifconfig because it's so
complicated to use, but I think that replacing the driver's name with
something like "eth0" reduces transparency for the user.
IMO having the real device name is much more convenient - when using
eth0 you loose information (which card is mapped to eth0?), and you
gain not that much (okay, I actually seem to have an ethernet device in
my computer).
And if you still keep your opinion and I couldn't convince you only a
little bit, then let's just agree to disagree on that point :-)
