I discovered the same problem earlier. In order to receive parameter 
notifications you
need to use the node-specific version of the StartWatching() function -
 that is
StartWatching(BMessenger &notifyHandler, const media=5Fnode &node, int32 
notificationType)

Another one for the list of BeBook omissions...
