Yes, they are pretty much the same hardware. You can already boot Haiku 
on your Mac, but at some point you'll get into KDL because the kernel 
can't access the boot disk yet.

It doesn't work as advertised; it does not support many basics so that 
it's really hard to work with. Furthermore, some basic functions (like 
memory allocations) are broken when they are available. And to make it 
even worse, it pretends to support it all (because you can check if 
certain things are available in OpenFirmware), but in fact, it doesn't.
Oh, and debugging doesn't work either which makes finding out about 
these flaws a rather boring and long task.
While Apple's OpenFirmware might not be perfect either, it's light 
years ahead in comparison.
