Perhaps those of us interested in PPC can chip in
some money towards a cheap Mac for Axel?

Like.. A slow G3 Blue&White.
So he doesn't get caught up in MacOS X. ;)
Pros:
- has OpenFirmware
- easy to open/change parts
- cheap
- for keyboard, there's both USB and ADB to choose from
(easier to get ADB off the ground than a full USB stack?)
- netboot
- upgradable
Cons:
- slow
