I suspect they build *on* R5 just fine, the issue is if they build *for* R5 or not. Now Haiku itself is usable devs only really worry about targeting Haiku with their code - meaning they may decide to use new, private Haiku APIs which would then mean the drivers won't work on R5.

Backwards compatibility means things written for R5 will work on Haiku - the other way around is not guaranteed (or particularly useful now Haiku is getting closer to completion).
