IMO, flattened BMessages as settings are wrong.

I would strongly prefer text files, so they can be
editied by other Operating system, and you
don't need a special app to change them.

But of couse, if you cold use flattened BMessages,
and have them stored as text files, that would be nice.
The format should either be close to the driver settings
format, or XML (or understand both)

ugly, reminds me of Regedit.
