It had many problems, but they were not inherent to the design of BeOS.
Now since we have to rewrite everything we certainly won't have these
networking problems as the original BeOS version had, and OpenGL was
simply missing and will be replaced by Mesa (an open-source OpenGL
compatible graphics library). All such problems will be addressed by
upcoming versions of OpenBeOS.
Instead, we should be going on with a new OS, with new cutting edge
features and ideas, and for application support, have a sort of
compatibility layer, or subsystem, if you will, for R5.
BeOS had many features and ideas that other OSes didn't and still don't
have (and also didn't have some that others had). All in all it was a
very innovative piece of software that still stands above all other
widely used OSes. We could certainly create a completely new OS, but it
is absolutely obvious that this would take *much* more time to create,
starting with planning and designing, and we wouldn't come very far,
since everyone has different opinions and actually all what the people
*here* want to see is BeOS.

Yes, it would have been great if Palm had released the BeOS source, but
they didn't, and I think it's time to move on, not try to re-create the
past.
By the way, this is a serious question, not trying to nock the OBOS
movement or anything, so please, no flamming.
