This is increasingly happening in the Linux world with distros like
Lycoris and Lindows AFAIK.

 Sure, if you want to d/l the source and build it yourself, it is free.
If not, you pay us N dollars. This is just a possibility. Something
that we, the admin team, haven't discussed but that I would like
opinions on

Unlike Linux, though, a big commercial venture is not needed to make OBOS user-friendly. Even if we only offer the source for free, people *will* make free pre-compiled versions, with some extra apps thrown in (the Max Edition guy, for instance) in short order.
