A FOCUS ON COMMUNITY COLLEGES
USA Today has announced its 2004 All-USA Community and Junior College
Academic teams. Coinciding with quite a bit of additional community
college news, the USA today reports make for interesting reading:
STUDENTS EMBRACE THE FUTURE
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_192.html
This essay describes the background and accomplishments of the first
team members, including a formerly homeless mother of three who now has
a 3.8 GPA at Oklahoma's Redlands Community College.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES FACING A "CAPACITY CRISIS"
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_193.html
This report describes the way the current increase in enrollments
combined with a lessening of states' support has hit community colleges.
SL2
WHY 'IT' HAS NOT PAID OFF AS WE HAD HOPED (YET)
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_194.html
A long essay by the dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and
its chief technology office at the University of Virginia about why,
from the days of punch cards and daisy wheel printers to our current
state in 2004, the promise of IT implementation in higher education has
not quite come through . . . yet.
SL3
COLLEGES ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO STAY ON FOUR-YEAR TRACK
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_195.html
A slow but steady erosion of four-year graduation rates is a problem for
many schools, especially those where most of the costs of that fifth or
sixth year in school are paid for by public funds.
SL4
NATIONAL ISSUES FOR AMERICAN COMMUNITY COLLEGES
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_196.html
A streaming radio show with Mark Milliron, president and CEO of the
League for Innovation in the Community College and George Boggs, former
president of Palomar College in California and now executive director of
the AACC. The discussion explores a number of current community college
issues, the AACC's responsibilities, and the implications of a number of
legislative initiatives. A League for Innovation radio show. (Works
well, even from a dial-up connection.)
SL5
CHANGING FACE VALUE: DESIGN DECISIONS AND THE CAMPUS IMAGE
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_197.html
Available in PDF, this article from Facilties Manager discusses
the palette of choices to be made when renovating or upgrading an older
building on campus. In order for changes in the building facade to
reflect a feeling of campus unity from one building to the next, careful
decisions must be made with regard to materials, colors, proportions,
and geometries.
SL6
THE CALIFORNIA DIGITAL LIBRARY
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_198.html
The current state of user (student, faculty) dissatisfaction with costs
and availability of textbooks and other scholarly publications is
discussed, using as a framework the achievements and aims of the
California Digital Library, which has made great strides in the 7 years
since its implementation. The question is, is it enough? What will
research and learning publications look like when we come out the other
end of these changes?
SL7
NEW GEHRY BUILDING OPENS ON MIT CAMPUS
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_199.html
Despite ongoing construction, tenants are moving into the Strata Center,
home to MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory,
or CSAIL, and other university departments. The 700,000 sf, nearly $300M
building has towers that house labs and research "neighborhoods" that
straddle several floors, collectively called "the warehouse." Inside,
a long arching corridor called "the student street" connects the towers,
and provides access to classrooms, lecture halls, a child care center,
and a cafe. Atop the student street is the "town center" level, with a
terrace, faculty dining, and a pub. In addition to the Boston Herald
article, above, here is a link to the Strata Center's home page:

SL8
A HALF-BILLION-DOLLAR DREAM AT AZUSA PACIFIC
http://www.scup.org/knowledge/links/sl_200.html
Azusa Pacific may soon unveil a proposed 20-year, $500 million growth
plan. That could add eight buildings and three parking structures, but
is exacerbating friction between the institution and the local
government, which has issues with the university's land use and tax
status.

FROM SCUP'S FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES
The Accessing Survey Resources with Electronic Research Sources
(ANSWERS) website is your guide or portal to information about national
datasets in postsecondary education. ANSWERS is available at:
-> http://nces.ed.gov/npec/answers/
ANSWERS was developed by the National Postsecondary Education
Cooperative (NPEC) and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's
National Center for Education Statistics. The online ANSWERS tools are
designed to help you quickly find the surveys, data, and support needed
for institutional research, policy analysis, and other studies. ANSWERS
currently includes the data dictionaries for 112 national datasets
representing over 24,000 different variables. A number of new surveys
have recently been added.
Using ANSWERS, planners and institutional researchers are able to make
more effective use of existing national datasets, including IPEDS and
sample surveys such as NPSAS and NSOPF. A special part of the website
is devoted just to the needs of institutional researchers. Graduate
students can use ANSWERS to find data for a dissertation or thesis, to
write better questions and definitions for a questionnaire, or to
quickly learn how to use a national dataset. An ANSWERS Tutorial is
available as part of the Site Help page.
Please help us get the word out about ANSWERS by disseminating this
information through any listservs and online or print newsletters to
which you contribute. Thank you in advance for sharing this information
about ANSWERS.
Let us know if you have any questions about ANSWERS or suggestions about
how we can promote this NCES-funded tool to planners, institutional
researchers, policy analysts, graduate students, and faculty.
