SCUP EMAIL NEWS for April 14-18, 2003
Informing higher education leaders via the Internet since 1987:
The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)
- SCUP's 2003 Membership Directory (print) is in the mail - to all

as an appreciation of your membership in and support of SCUP, of our
latest book: "Transforming e-Knowledge."
- Also in the mail to members, under separate cover, is the new issue
of our journal, "Planning for Higher Education." This issue is a
theme issue, "Sustainability: Taking the Long View," with guest
editor, Camille Kirk of Context Research + Mapping, and is more than
220 pages in length - probably the best single publication of its
kind that there is. Your nonmember colleagues can purchase copies

SCUP'S SPANISH CONNECTION
http://www.scup.org/utopia.htm
"Journey to Utopia," the story of a 1927 Spanish expedition to visit
North American campuses and bring the best of their design back to
Spain, recently received the Premio Vitruvio 2002 International
Architecture Award. Its author, Pablo Campos, visited the United States
recently to participate in the jury for the SCUP/AIA-CAE Excellence in
Planning Awards and also to assist SCUP's project to raise funds to have
his excellent book translated and published in English. Maria Wilpon of
Helpern Architects is leading that SCUP project. Maria, Pablo, and SCUP's
executive director, Jolene Knapp, will be introducing SCUP to Spanish
higher education leaders during a visit to Madrid in mid-May.

TEACHING IN THE WIRELESS CLOUD
http://www.thefeature.com/index.jsp?url=article.jsp?pageid=35265
From "The Feature" comes this very nice, complex article. We're calling
it a must-read for everyone interested in technology planning, academic
planning, and institutional change: "Students with mobile devices are
slowly redefining some fundamental campus rules."
SIX FACTORS TO CONSIDER
WHEN PLANNING ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION
http://www.westga.edu/%7Edistance/ojdla/spring61/levy61.htm
From the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration (OJDLA):
"This paper reviews the literature as it pertains to six factors to be
considered when planning and developing an online distance learning
program. These six areas are: vision and plans, curriculum, staff
training and support, student services, student training and support,
and copyright and intellectual property."
A RECOMMENDATION FOR MANAGING THE PREDICTED GROWTH
IN COLLEGE ENROLLMENT AT A TIME OF ADVERSE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS
http://www.westga.edu/%7Edistance/ojdla/spring61/jones61.htm
Also from OJDLA: "The purpose of this paper is to explore the option of
using distance education courses as a viable alternative to building
classrooms and facilities."
RETHINKING WIRELESS & BUSINESS INCUBATORS
http://www.universitybusiness.com/page.cfm?id=3
At least two of the articles in the latest issue of University Business
are of interest. RETHINKING WIRELESS: "Ubiquitous campus computing is
here to stay as wireless technology reshapes the LANscape" and BUSINESS
INCUBATORS: INVESTING IN IDEAS: "Even with limited funding, university
incubators find creative ways to nurture new businesses."
A $20-MILLION CARROT
http://chronicle.com/free/v49/i32/32a03901.htm
From the Chronicle: "Innovation Hall, a $20-million, 100,000-square-
foot building stocked with technological tools, will be a showpiece for
George Mason University and will undoubtedly be an attractive location
for courses that use technology. Alan G. Merten, the university's
president, plans to use that to his advantage. *** Teaching in Innova-
tion Hall will be a reward for those who have already upgraded their
courses to use technology."
POISED BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: THE UNIVERSITY AS MONASTERY AND MARKETPLACE
by Nancy Cantor and Steven Schomberg
http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/erm0320.pdf
From EDUCAUSE Review: "Universities may need to have a bit more of the
noise of the marketplace and the public square, a closer connection to
the issues and concerns of the day, if not to become dulled by
insularity and ruled irrelevant by the public."
KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION
http://www.iskme.org/monograph.html
This monograph is the product of a December 2002 summit on education and
knowledge management. It "describes the opportunities and challenges
faced by those working to improve the use and sharing of information in
education through practices that have come to be known as knowledge
management" and is available in PDF format online.
ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY OF HIGHER EDUCATION (ASHE) - NEWSLETTER
http://www.ashe.missouri.edu/newsletter/contents.htm
ASHE puts its newsletter online three times a year and it's well worth
a few moments to browse through it and see what the folks who study the
Academy are up to. As we mentioned a couple of months ago, former SCUP
president Marv Peterson received the Howard Bowen Distinguished Career
Award at the last ASHE conference. You can read more detail about that
here: http://www.ashe.missouri.edu/newsletter/contents.htm#notables2.

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
Research done by US military schools has shown the #1 difference
in children's scholastic success depends on parental involvement.
You can model their success by simply inviting your parents into
your school and ask them to be active in the classroom.
