Sheer poetry, and a powerful temptation, indeed.

Sometimes, I, too, feel the pull of the Tao and want to join
Zhuang-tzu, who when asked by advisors to the king to accept an
official position directed their attention to the gilded tortise
sitting on the altar of the king's ancestors. Where, he asked, would
the tortise rather be, dead and gilded on the altar or alive and
wagging his tail in the mud. "Begone," he said, "I, too, will wag my
tail in the mud."

Soon, however, I will be a grandparent. What will the world be like in
which "Butterbean," so named temporarily after the image in an early
sonogram, will have to live? Blood calls to blood. The activist
awakes. Confucius' call to responsibility cannot be ignored.
