I am sure that you have all heard of the terrorist
attacks in Spain. At present, it is not even clear if
they were conducted by the Basque ETA or by some
Islamist organization, but definite interpretations of
the event have already been offered.
The British foreign secretary, Jack Straw, said that
the attacks were a "disgusting assault on the very
principles of European democracy."
The Europe minister Denis MacShane called them "a
monstrous assault on European democracy." For the
president of the European parliament, Pat Cox, they
are nothing less than "a declaration of war on
democracy".

It is striking how the reactions of some members of
the European political establishment (though seemingly
all British) resemble some of the American clap...um,
rhetoric after September 11. How do they know that the
attacks are directed against democracy ? Which
conception of democracy is under assault here -
Aznar's, who took Spain into Iraq war against 90% of
the public opinion, and who said that on the issue of
Basque self-determination there is nothing to talk
about ?
The attack itself is of course depressing, but so are
the reactions.
O.K.
