[lit-ideas] Re: Bullying Iran - New York Times

In other words, your answer to my question, 'What evidence do you
have?' is, 'None.'

Both the NYT and the Washinton Post strongly supported the invasion and dutifully reported White House "allegations" (i.e., total lies) about Iran as fact. Both papers covered up, ignored, or underreported information that undermined the case for war.

After several years of reporting the war as a success, it became clear it was a fiasco. Only then did both papers finally printed long articles to apologize for their failures in journalism. That is the response to Robert's request for evidence: the NYT and Washington Post both admitted and apologized.

Irene is right. The US media in general failed us. Only the Knight-Ridder papers were critical of the US. The rest of the media rode into the war, whooping on the backs of US tanks. On that point, they were no different from Fox News.

As for Brian, who dismisses the idea that Iran offered to help capture bin Laden, I can only say this: the Iranians recently said that Bush's biggest problem is that he believes his own propaganda.

A US diplomat, talking with Bush before the war started, asked how Bush would handle the tensions between Shiite and Sunni in Iraq. Bush blinked in bafflement and said "I thought they were all Muslims."

Iran is Shiite and the Taliban were Sunni. Iran did not want a Pakistan-proxy country on its borders. Iran wanted the Taliban destroyed. Iran was a key element in the US invasion of Afghanistan: Iran provided landing fields, fly-over space, and help on the ground. Today, the current US-proxy government in Afghanistan exists because it is supported by Iran. If Iran withdraws their support, the government collapses.

Have you noticed that a lot of US helicopters are being shot down lately? The Iraqi now have advanced Russian ground-to-air shoulder-fired missiles. Saudi billionaires are supplying weapons against the US.

Brian certainly doesn't remember that the turning point of the US-sponsored jihad against the Soviets in Afghanistan was the deployment of Stinger missiles. The US handed out tens of thousands of Stingers to the jihadi, who began dropping Soviet helicopters and airplanes like pidgeons. This was devastating to the Soviets. Someone in Russia is repaying the favor to the USA.

The Shiite can easily win the Iraqi civil war and end the mess. But that would mean the USA would leave. It's much better for Iran to keep the US in the quagmire, tied down and bloodied every day, for the next two-three years. So... the Shiites don't win. They harass us just enough. Bush is too stupid to realize this, so he continues to fight.

yrs,
andreas
