Hi Ken, and all HomeClinic'ers!

On the subject of extended warranties for your new appliances,
I don't have a 'cut and dried' answer for every situation, but as a
general rule I don't recommend them. I see very few cases where
they're a good buy for the average household.

Unless you have a large family and are really hard on your
appliances, *and* have a reliable service company in your area
that will honor your particular EW, you very likely won't get your
money's worth from an extended warranty.

If you are considering extended coverage, here's what I'd
recommend:

1) Never buy the extended warranty when you buy the appliance.
Mark your calendar for 11 months or so down the road, and buy
it then.

The whole first year you own your appliance, you're already
covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Truth is - and retailers
don't like this bandied about - 'plunk down your hard-earned
cash on the day you buy the machine and the retailer has interest-free
use of it that whole first year. Even though the extended warranty
doesn't start until the equipment's 366 days old.

That's the main reason the pressure's really on to sell EW's with
the appliance purchase (That, and the fact that sellers know most
of us won't remember to buy it when the original warranty's almost
up).

2) Read the fine print. Our company used to do work for several
'third party' warranty contracting firms. Until we filed our claims
and (then!) read the fine print and realized that very, very little was
actually covered where 'the rubber met the road'. Manufacturer
EW's are generally better in this area, but I'd still be very careful
to review the coverage details before 'biting'.

That's a long answer to a short question, but our short version is
almost always: 'don't bother'.

Thanks, and God bless,

Dave Harnish
