Yes, it probably will leak, but I've done the same thing Dave suggested and
screwed on a hose cap.
Last year I changed the anode rod and had to drain some water before tilting
it over enough to get the new rod in. It wasn't difficult because the water
connections are made with screw-on copper tubing.
