You can start by choosing an area you'd like to work on and start coding.
Better yet, you can have a look at the bugtrack http://dev.haiku-os.org/ and
try to fix some bugs.
Coding guidelines are very important in open source projects, especially
in this one! I struggled a bit at the beginning, Michael can confirm ;-) so
I suggest you to read the following carefully

Once you have made modification to the source, you can create a patch
by issuing the command "svn diff > mypatch.diff" , make sure to run svn
update first.
If you are new to svn I suggest you to read this
http://svnbook.red-bean.com/nightly/en/svn.tour.cycle.html
Once the patch is done, you can email it to the right mailing list so an
Haiku dev
can review it and eventually commit it for you.
