Feel free to call "feature creep" on this one:

I would even suggest the same system could be used for email or SMS
notifications (as add-ons?) - which would be really nice for critical
events from a remote location or to alert admins.

The ability to notify remote services of events is a feature I think
is sorely lacking in today's world of networked computers.  I can't
see any reason why the notification has to be on-screen.  This same
service could be used for system-wide event logging as well.

In any case, now I'm just bloating a simple OS feature :)
