Karen,
Yes, Touch Graphics is very much around. Their tablet will be a great
way to use the T-maps because you can then have audio labels.

Hi it's Karen and Harpo. I saw your post about the maps, and wonder
if you have seen the site called Touch Graphics from NY.
It's a sort of a tablet for graphics. I thought the site was
interesting, but don't know if they're still around. Karen and Harpo guidedog.

Subject: [gps-talkusers] Tactile maps
Alice,
I was thinking specifically of the T-Map project from Smith
Kettlewell when I mentioned tactile maps in my last email. That
project is coming along quite nicely. Sendero has been assisting
by
providing maps and the map engine. They are testing it through
the
Lighthouse for the Blind in San Francisco.
These nonprofit projects don't always move quickly but we are
hopeful
that T-Maps will be available in the U.S. this year and perhaps
other
countries will find sponsors too.
The user goes to a web site and picks a location where they want
a
tactile map. The BRF file is generated. The user downloads this
file
and then embosses the map on their own embosser. There probably
won't
be any charge if you do it this way without any tech support.
There may be another service for those who don't have embossers
where
you could have maps sent to you for a small fee.
They have really done a fabulous job labeling the maps, providing
a
key and allowing the scale of the map to be determined.
I stress that these maps are not available to the public yet
other
than perhaps to local San Francisco users through the Lighthouse.
Stay tuned.

Mike and all,
Has anybody seen or heard about the tactile maps being produced
by
those two scientists in San Francisco? They sound really
interesting. Does anyone know how big an area each map covers?

Matthew,
We do try to stay on the GPS topic on this list but I wasn't
going
to say anything about your off topic message. Certainly we try
to
discourage the one liner hellos and thank you messages but some
people can't resist.
Let's just leave it at that and nothing more needs to be said.
Heck, maybe your embosser could be used for printing tactile maps
and in that event, it is loosely on topic.

Hello all,
I apologize if I thought it would be ok to place my item for sale
on this list. I guess since I saw people posting personal
hello's
and one line messages that my for sale message wouldn't be
clutter.
Sorry if it bothered anyone.
