The purpose of doing it that way is to make the indexing of pages
happen in a seperate server process to the actual page display /
editing / watcher, meaning the display of a page is not impacted
directly by the overhead of indexing.

What exactly is too slow? wiki.splitbrain.org or your own
installation? There are many factors which could be causing a problem.
