phpmailer seems nice, thanks.

Now, about the rss feeds part: i finally got it. I can't believe i could be this dumb. My wiki is hosted on a public site but must be used only by our group so I don't have any public pages (read/edit/create/delete nothing). Now, the login method (i'm using plain but i guess it would be the same with every installer provided method) uses a login form. Obviously, no feed reader (none that i know of anyway) knows how to handle this type of authentication (this is quite normal). What threw me off at first was that it worked in Firefox, but it also gave me the "hint"(actually it hit me like a hammer) when i saw that it worked only after i logged in to my wiki(i guess it used the cookie). My setup now uses http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:tips:htaccessauth along with my apache authentication realm and BAM! the thunderbird rss feed folder filled up like magic :D

Sorry for all the annoying questions (for the ones asked on freenode's irc channel too). Nobody suggested that authentication was to blame...nobody thought i could be that stupid.

You might want to look at phpmailer:

It will work with just about any mail setup--if you can personally send email from your machine, using an email client, this should work.
