[dokuwiki] Tidying up attic directory?

Is there any way to tidy up the attic directory? Because it contains
one file for every past revision of every page, we currently have 3000
little .txt.gz files in there for a wiki that contains 374 files.
According to the IS people here who are handling backup of the server
that our wiki lives on, their backup process doesn't like this because
it has to loop over each file to see how compressible it is and how much
space it'll need on the backup (don't ask me, this seems insane, but
it's just the way they do things).
Would anything bad happen if I just dumped the entire attic directory
into one big .tar.gz file for safe keeping, other than that it then
would be hard to get at the older revisions?
