public wiki. A difference is when editing our wiki at work. If my
colleague needs to edit a certain page I will free the lock for him -
but hey they are just a few meters away - no need for a technical
solution: Shouting is fine (or using Instant Messaging if that fits you
more).

This is exactly the usage scenario I had in mind: if I want to write
a paper with a colleague of mine who is overseas the shouting approach
is not viable ;) Moreover in that scenario edit sessions tend to be
somewhat long....
Using IM is not always ideal for several reasons (the users of a large community may not find an agreement on what IM system to use, not
everyone has IM programs available, those who do not use a IM program
everyday would not install and use it just for this kind of minimal and occasional interactions, ....).
