Well the thing is to notify the editing user it would need two
additional things:
1) some meta info about the attempted access by a second user - means
creating another file
2) an AJAX request every few second from the current editor to check for
the existance of this file to display the notification.
Both things aren't too hard to implement but it's still some work and
increases the used server resources somewhat.
But after all I'm not convinced of it giving any benefit. I mean I
always take the time I need to edit a page. Would I work faster if I
know someone else want to edit the page as well? Probably not on a
public wiki. A difference is when editing our wiki at work. If my
colleague needs to edit a certain page I will free the lock for him -
but hey they are just a few meters away - no need for a technical
solution: Shouting is fine (or using Instant Messaging if that fits you
more).
