An issue I have encountered in the past is that printer's software expected
PDF files to be in CMYK as far as colour is concerned. That is now a
receding problems as more and more RGB is accepted, though it does mean that
you rely on the printer for RGB to CMYK conversion.

I don't think the software used by printers assumes anything about the
source of the PDF file, but I have found that PDF files which would load and
display correctly in Adobe Acrobat on a Mac did not always pass without
problems on the printer's set-up. They are using third party software for
imposition and separation and the issue has been, apparently, that such
software did not implement all possible PDF features. That also seems more a
problem in the past.

I handle the printing of a magazine originated using Ovation Pro and
supplied to me in PDF format. The PDF files seem to work OK with the printer
I use, though there are times when I need to work on the PDF files before
passing them on.

I cannot comment on the use of current versions of GhostScript or RiScript.
