As the OP, I now feel terribly stupid. However, I cannot say that I
should never have started this thread. Let me explain (if I can).

I wanted to backup both Windows and RISC OS machines to a device which
could be easily connected/disconnected to and from the network linking
the various machines, for the purpose of creating an overall
"fire-proof" backup to be kept in an other place. Reason? I did not
like the thought of my office going up in flames and losing
everything, which happened recently to an accountant of my
acquaintance. You can imagine his problems with clients clamouring for
their end-of-year accounts and tax returns.

I thought my solution was a single very large hard drive, USB-
connected to one of the Windows machines on my network, with
directories allocated to each machine on the network. Do the backups
as required, unplug it and put it in the "safe" (away from the office
and house). OK, that may not sound too convenient, but it would be
less of a hassle than having to re-create a large number of files.

That was where my stupidity started. I copied RISC OS files across the
network using LanMan98 to the appropriate directory. Looking at the
directory on the USB hard drive, I saw the files copied appearing with
the ",xxx" extensions. Foolishly, I thought this was not what I wanted
and that was the point at which I started to Zip up files and started
asking you all about the problems which naturally followed.

Having read the ensuing contributions, I wandered from "despair" to
"wonder" to "realisation". Martin is quite right (of course); when you
view the USB drive's directory, it shows files with the ",xxx"
extensions, *but* when viewed over the network using LanMan98 on the
RISC OS machine the LanMan98 directory shows those same files without
that extension and correctly filetyped according to RISC OS.

What is more, with LanMan98 running on VirtualAcorn, the same files in
the USB drive are seen as correctly filetyped there also.

This happy resolution has appeared to me only slowly. Hence the reason I
feel so stupid.

Please! Don't tell me I'm wrong and seeing things which are not there.
It would definitely not <d.harry> make my day. </d.harry>

With appropriate apologies for the nuisance caused.

Frank.
