There are good reasons for using an external hard drive for backup
purposes (as opposed to a secondary internal hard drive). Maybe there
is no space in the case for another internal hard drive. More
importantly, you would not normally attach the backup drive, so there
is no risk of accidentally writing to it.
Obviously, if you only want the hard drive for backup purposes and not
for file transfer to other platforms you would not care whether you
can take it anywhere else and read it on a different platform. So, in
that case, it is perfectly sensible to have a RISC OS formatted
external hard drive.
But there is no choice anyway - if you want a directly attached
external hard drive with more than 2GB, it has to be RISC OS
formatted. I still prefer the idea of having a network attached
storage device - that combines all the advantages: Can be any size, is
readable from all platforms, retains file types (though not all other
RISC OS file attributes).
