[Bristol-Birds] Elizabethton & Roan Mtn. CBCs

The 64th consecutive Elizabethton CBC was held on Saturday, 16 Dec 2006.
17 observers in 5 parties found 71 species.  The average number of species
over the previous 25 years was 70.9   The all-time high was 79 in 1995 & 2001.
Temperature was 28-70 degrees, under clear skies, with no wind.

Highlights:
N. Shoveler - 2  (3rd record on this count, others in 1946 & 1969).
Canvasback - 1  (4th count record, others in 1956, 1960, 1983).
N. Bobwhite - 2  (only found twice in last 12 years).
Bald Eagle - 2 ad.  (found 10 of last 13 years, but only once prior to 1988).
Selasphorus sp. - 2  (4th straight year, hoping bander gets another chance).
Horned Lark - 1  (only 3rd since 1974, others in 1981 & 1984).
Gray Catbird - 1  (4th count record, but found 3 of last 4 years, other in 
1949).
Chipping Sparrow - 2  (found 6 of last 9 years).

other notes:
Ruffed Grouse - count week.
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 2
Loggerhead Shrike - none, found only 3 times since 1990.
Purple Finch - none, found only 5 times since 1991, previously annual.
Evening Grosbeak - none, last found in 1999, only 5 times from 1986-1999.

The Roan Mtn. CBC was held on Sunday, 17 Dec 2006 for the 54th time in
57 years.  9 observers in 2 parties found 44 species.  The average number
of species over the previous 25 years was 43.2   The all-time high was 55 in 
1987.
Temperature was 27-64 degrees, under clear skies, and light wind.

Highlights:
Wood Duck - 1  (3rd since 1987, when Ripshin Lake first covered).
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 22  (breeds, mainly in spruce-fir belt).
Red Crossbill - 1  (scarce this fall / winter, despite good cone crop).
Pine Siskin - 42  (breeds in spruce-fir belt).
