5 Dec. 2005
Boone Lake
mainly Sullivan Co.
Following a tip from Larry McDaniels about a sizable raft of ducks &
grebes on part of Boone Lake, I did a thorough survey of the lake,
finding the following:
Redhead - 14
scaup sp. - 156
Surf Scoter - 2 female-type
Bufflehead - 21
Red-br. Merganser - 269
Com. Loon - 40
Pied-billed Grebe - 8
Horned Grebe - 740 (yes, SEVEN hundred forty)
Dbl-cr. Cormorant - 2
Am. Coot - 35
Bonaparte's Gull - 50
Ring-billed Gull - 120
Herring Gull - 6
The number of Red-br. Mergansers & Horned Grebes establish new high
counts for the 5-county area, and the number of Horned Grebes is one of
the highest ever in the state.
Also, in the Boone's Creek area:
Gr. White-fronted Goose - 3
Ross's Goose - 1
(both rare in East Tenn.)
