I thought I posted this link last night, but apparently it got lost somewhere.
Sibley has a discussion on the issue of identifying geese at

Subject: [Bristol-Birds] Previous Small Goose Report
Rick et al
.
I saw what may have been a Richardson's back in the summer. The single bird
was about half the size of it's larger counterparts. The major mark recorded
in
my field notes was the beak being 1/3 the length of the head, appearing
smaller than that pictured in Sibley's Guide for the Lesser Canada Goose
which had
me thinking Richardson's. Like Rick and Bill's bird there was no distinct
neck ring. I am still not certain exactly how to distinguish these two or
which
of the smaller geese received species status. David Sibley may have
discussion
of such posted on his web site.

This afternoon there were 61 Canada Goose and one Lesser Canada Goose. I
found the flotilla from the riverside parking area upstream from the weir. The
smaller goose was about half the size of the others. A good field mark was
the
beak being about 1/3 the length of the head. The breast appeared to be a
shade
darker gray than the larger counterparts. There was no noticeable "notch" at
the
apex of the white facial patch. This could have been a "Richardson's" as
described by the Sibley's Guide, but I am not certain how to extinguish the
two!
