27 December 2004
Sullivan County, TN - South Holston River
Carter County, TN - Roan Mountain (Carver's Gap)
At about 9:00am this morning, I was able to relocate the Cackling Goose
(observed by Rick Knight and Bill Grigsby yesterday). The goose was found
at the Wier Dam on South Holston River, just below South Holston Dam. It
was initially associated with five Canada Geese, but later moved away and
began swimming upstream. After about 10 minutes, the Canada Geese took
flight and the Cackling Goose joined them (all heading upstream). About
three minutes later, I was joined by Wallace Coffey. Together we relocated
the goose again, with about 60 Canada Geese, at the base of South Holston
Dam. The geese were feeding on the grassy island (where the power station
is located).
Other waterfowl present at Wier Dam:
Bufflehead
Canvasback (1)
Ruddy Duck (1)
Gadwall
Mallard
Lesser Scaup
Greater Scaup (1)
Green-winged Teal (2)
American Wigeon
Later (about 2:00pm), I drove to Roan Mountain (Carter County). About 30
Red Crossbills were present at Carver's Gap (Tennessee and North Carolina
side). Several groups were also heard flying overhead.
