I went to Greene Co. Thursday to see the three imm. Ross's Geese
reported by Don Miller...marvelous birds, the first immature plumage Ross's
I've had
the pleasure to observe. Amazingly, that makes 9, possibly 10 total Ross's
Geese I've seen in eastern TN this season! (Six at Kingston Steam Plant, one
possible flyover in Greene Co.) Add to that over 30 Snow Geese and 4 Greater
White-fronted Geese, and i have to call this the Year of the Goose for this
hillbilly!
Afterwards, returning home I stopped at Limestone to check on the
SANDHILL CRANE on Keebler Rd. It was still there, but slightly relocated. I
found
it along Keebler Rd. roughly halfway between Smith Bridge Rd. and the
Tri-state Equipment barn. From the top of the hill on the road I could see it
to the
east in the large puddle that sets back several dozen yards from the road.
BTW, I've been told that this site was the location of the schoolhouse
that Davy Crockett attended. If you look closely in the dirt alongside the
eastern edge of the road there near the top of the hill, you will see some
medium-sized cobblestones supposedly once part of the foundation. I can't help
but
wonder if Davy Crockett ever saw Sandhill Cranes in the area. Or Whooping
Cranes, for that matter. This site is only a short distance from the pond in
Greene Co. where the migrating Whooping Crane from the "non-migratory" flock in
Florida stopped for a few days a few winters back.
Sorry about going on so long...I teach, so "birdwalking" is second
nature for me.
