The Shady Valley Christmas Bird Count, sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club,
is schedule for Saturday with sunrise at 7:36am and sunset 5:16pm.

We need to make a call by 12 noon to 1 pm on Friday as to whether the count
is still on for Saturday. The deciding factor is the ability of birders to
get into Shady Valley because of the high mountain roads from the south
(Carter Co.) and west (Sullivan Co.). Those coming from I-81 and other
Virginia locations by way of Damascus will probably not experience bad road
conditions into the valley. That route has no mountains or steep ridges.

At 3:45pm today (Thursday), Shady Valley has about a 3-inch ground cover of
snow with the roads passable. We have conducted our count with very
successful results in a driving snowstorm with limited visibility. The
roads in the valley are generally passable because TDOT has a county
substation there with salt, rock, plows and crews.

As cloudy skies and snow showers and flurries continue Friday, highs will
top out near 30 degrees. Many areas could see light snow accumulations, with
the higher elevations getting as much as 3 or 4 inches of total snow
accumulation by Friday evening as a second system moves into the area.

At 4:00pm today the weather station at Shady Valley shows Temperature (=B0F)
28.4 Humidity (%) 97.6 Wind (mph) S 7.2 WIND CHILL: 19.5 =B0F =20

The region is facing a light snow event thru Friday evening as a blast of
wintry weather closes out the week.

A cloudy start to the weekend with lingering flurries and Saturday temps in
the mid 30`s. As high pressure finally moves in to break the chilly pattern
on Sunday, the sun will make an appearance, with a nice temperature recovery
into the upper 40`s.

Winds at the jet stream level continue to pump in cold air from the
northwest, and the southern Appalachians will see chilly temperatures over
the next few days. Highs Thursday will struggle into the mid 30`s with
mostly cloudy skies.

This pattern will usher in a fast moving area of low pressure from the
central and northern plains, which is expected to produce light snow across
the region. A winter storm watch is in effect for much of Southwest Virginia
and Northeast Tennessee Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Overnight
lows will be in the mid 20`s.

Rob Biller is the compiler of the Shady count.

More communications about the Shady Valley Christmas Bird Count will be
coming soon.

Let's go birding.....
