[Bristol-Birds] Re: Purple-Finch at feeder!

Bristol Birders and Chris O'Bryan:
The Purple Finch record is a very good find for Shady
Valley. We spend years and years birding in the
valley in winter and you pop right up with a Purple
Finch in winter.
The records you mentioned came from our book
which was published in 1999. There was only one
winter record at that time.
However, there was a bird seen on 24 Feb 2000 by
John Shumate and Larry McDaniel.
So congratulations to you, Chris, for having found the
valley's third ever winter record for the Purple Finch.
A great discovery. Just remember, I've been birding
in Shady for 41 years and I've never seen a Purple
Finch in Shady Valley during that time.
Experienced birders will all argue that they've probably
been there a lot of times before. That doesn't make a
bit of difference. John Shumate has lived in the valley
and kept a highly-successful feeder operation going
and he has only seen one Purple Finch in there in winter
in 40 years ! Yes 40 years! It has been 30 years since
Todd Eastin has seen one there in winter ! Yea, 30
years !
Thanks for all your good records.
