Musick's Campground,
Weir Dams and South Holston Dam,
South Holston Lake, Sullivan Co., TN
I heard a Sandhill Crane call, three times within a minute or so, around
3 pm this afternoon while birding Musick's Campground. Between the wind and
my multiple layers of hoods and hats, I couldn't place the direction with
certainty. I never saw the bird.
Rack Cross joined me shortly thereafter. We scoped out the lake, then
walked the banks in search of cranes and snow buntings and leftover
shorebirds (without luck). The following birds were found at Musick's:
Horned Grebe (~15), Pied-billed Grebe (~5), Common Loon (~5), Great Blue
Heron (1), Bufflehead (13), Cooper's Hawk (1), Red-tailed Hawk (1), Osprey
(1), Sandhill Crane (1 heard), Kildeer (1), Bonaparte's Gull (~30?),
Ring-billed Gull (~60?), Belted Kingfisher (1), Northern Flicker (1),
American Crow (~8), Eastern Bluebird (2)
Earlier, from about noon to 2 pm, I birded at the Weir Dams and South
Holston Dam and found the following:
Weir Dams (mainly at the head of Osceola Island) -
many Bufflehead, a few Ring-necked Duck (males and females), a few Lesser
Scaup (males and females), a few Greater Scaup (females only), Mallards
(twice seen with fish and being pursued by Gulls), Ring-billed Gulls
South Holston Dam and the lake -
300+ Ring-billed Gulls, about a dozen Bufflehead, and a Common Raven
The beaver pond on S. Holston Dam Road -
one male Green-winged Teal among about a dozen Mallards, a Red-tailed Hawk
and an Eastern Phoebe
Don Holt
