The Bristol Bird Club will have a fun-field trip in Eastern Sullivan County
this
Saturday, Nov. 17. This is a substitute field trip for one scheduled for this
date as part of our July annual planning schedule but cancelled earlier this
week.
We are back in business. We should enjoy some hot spots for great invasions
species. BBC Pres. Dave Worley will lead the group, and
the trip should last at least the morning. We will be on level paved and
grassy
areas and good foot surfaces. Since we'll also be birding the Bristol
and S.H. Lake waterfowl wintering and migratory resting areas, we'll meet
at Shelley's Chicken House on U.S. 421 south of Bristol. Birders coming
from Southwest VA might want to head south of Va Rt. 75 from Abingdon
and across the state line straight to U.S. 421 at Darter's Store. Turn right
and the Chicken House will be on your left at the South Holston Dam turnoff
sign just a couple of miles north towards Bristol. Birders from south or
west can easily reach the Chicken House by TN Rt. 394 from Blountville
or the Bristol Motor Speedway to U.S. 421 and then south on 421 for a
couple of miles.
Those who want to carpool from there will find plenty of transportation
or passengers. Anybody is welcome to attend and BBC fieldtrips which are
family-friendly and free for everyone. The Chicken House opens early.
The early-birds and coffee lovers will meet at the Chicken House for tasty
biscuits, hot beverages and whatever degree of breakfast suits them.
The birding party rolls out at 8 a.m. Breakfast-types may arrive from
7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
We anticipate many good birds and birders.
We are staged with an excellent opportunity to search for great influx
species which are showing up in the region and nearby states. We will
bird enthusiastically in good habitat for American Tree Sparrow,
Pine Siskin, Purple Finch, Red Crossbills, Red-breasted Nuthatches,
Brown Creeper, American Pipits, Snow Bunting, Fox Sparrows, Snow Goose,
American Redpoll, Black Scoter, Surf Scoter, Eared Grebe, Bald Eagle,
Northern Harrier and such. Dazzling waterfowl should include
Gadwall, American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Ring-necked
Duck, scaup, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Ruddy Duck, grebes, coots
and gulls.
Come go birding with Dave !! Who
knows what is out there ? It's always fun to search together.
Let's go birding.......
