Area Birders,
Today, fellow bird club member and friend, Clarence Brown and I birded Duly
Hollow, an area near Hurley, VA in the northern part of Buchanan County. It is
a mountainous area of thick woodland with timbered openings interspersed among
the tall stands of deciduous trees.
The open areas with Goldenrod, abundant Poke berry bushes and small shrubs held
the most birds.
American Robins, Cedar Waxwings and Cardinals were feeding on the Poke berries.
A couple of Eastern Bluebirds were in the flock. Juncos and Mourning Doves
worked the dirt banks and open flat areas.

Woodpeckers were abundant with Pileated, Northern Flicker, Red-bellied, Downy
and Hairy all accounted for.

White-breasted Nuthatches were working some of the tall trees, and Winter Wrens
and Carolinas were seen among some of the downed trees.

A Golden-crowned Kinglet worked through the small shrubs of an open hillside.

One large Red-tailed Hawk flew from the ridge near us and flew out to circle
over the valley before deciding on a new heading.

We expected to see more sparrow species than we did with only Song and
White-throated observed.

Enjoy the birds,

Roger Mayhorn
Grundy, VA
Buchanan County
