[Bristol-Birds] Saturday BBC Boating / Birding Trip

Rack Cross and Kevin Elam will lead a Bristol Bird Club birdwalk at Whitetop
Park this coming Saturday morning. Rack will post details in a seperate
message.
Following the walk, those who participate in the Whitetop Park walk will be
able to go on a float boat birding trip for waterfowl at South Holston Lake.
We will leave from Whitetop Park and decide on a nearby place to eat a bite of
lunch or get something to take with us for lunch on the boat.
We can take 10 or 11 persons on the boat and we only have eight life jackets so
we need you to notify me by e-mail if you can bring one or more life jackets.
We must have an approved life jacket for every passenger. This will be a
comfortalbe and a safe number of passengers with seating for everyone.
The wind can be nippy. Bring a good jacket with hood and gloves if you must
keep your hands warm. The boat runs fast so the air seems colder than the
surrounding air temperature when the boat is not moving. You may also want to
bring hot coffee, soft drinks, snacks, sunglasses, bird books, binoculars,
scopes, field cards, hats or whatever. This will be a really fun birding /
boating outing.
It was on one such BBC float boat trip that we discovered the region's second
ever record of the Eared Grebe and first for the species at South Holston Lake.
That provided the awareness of their wintering at the reservoir. We have had
Eared Grebes every year since.
Our boating trip will cover all of the lower portion of the reservoir to South
Holston Dam, Riddle Creek, Big Creek, Little Oak Campground, Josiaha Creek,
Spring Creek Embayment, Musick's Campground, Camp Sequoya and north to Avens
Bridge in Washington Co., Va.
Modern and clean bathrooms will be available at the dock before we leave and we
also have a backup bathroom on board the boat as well as picnic supplies, sink,
covered seating areas as needed.
Bristol Bird Club members have first priority for boarding incase we determine
we have more people than we can take on water. The trip is free to
participants.
Please e-mail wallace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if you plan to go birding with us
Saturday morning and how many persons you expect to have. We will try to work
everything on a first come, first seated basis if we have too big of a group.
Let's go birding...
