Area Birders,
Yesterday, Nov. 26, Ed Caudill, another Buchanan County Bird Club member and
myself,(Roger Mayhorn) birded a reclaimed strip site near Compton Mountain
here in Buchanan County. Clear cut logging had been going on in the area
since early spring and huge sections of large trees were gone with nothing
left but a wasteland.
However, in the areas that were undisturbed the birds were abundant with 22
species found. 4 species of sparrows were located: FOX, SONG, SWAMP,
WHITE-THROATED as well as JUNCO. I saw my first WINTER WREN of the
season, though Ed Caudill had seen them twice earlier. We flushed 4 RUFFED
GROUSE, which was a nice surprise. DOWNY WOODPECKERS were active with 7
observed as well as 3 PILEATED and 2 RED-BELLIEDS.
Enjoy the birds and have a good Thanksgiving,
Roger Mayhorn
Grundy, VA
